Summer Reading List For New 6th Graders

“Students’ relationship with reading during the summer is a pretty good window into what the relationship will be once they leave our classrooms for good. We have an opportunity with summer reading to open that window to individual passions and interests and at the same time prevent the loss of achievement that months without practice bring.”
~Penny Kittle, Book Love

With that thought in mind, we have established the parameters of our summer reading program. Each grade level has a list of authors to guide students in their choice of summer reading. Students will be expected to read Three books over the summer.

All incoming 6th grade students are expected to read The Wednesday Wars
by Gary D. Schmidt for their third book.

The remaining Two books are to be selected from either:

             - or -
      (3) The 2016-17 Chester County Middle School Reading Olympics Book List. - click here

In the past, parents have expressed that a “shared read” offers many valuable discussion starters between a child and parent. Please consider reading the Gary D. Schmidt book with your child. Schmidt’s books offer thought provoking topics that will stimulate conversation.

Parents will be responsible for signing off on their child’s summer reading (click here). These lists and the sign-off form can be found on the “Downloads” page of the C.F. Patton Middle School website:

MLK Day of Service

Dear Hillendale Community,

As many of you know, Hillendale is very involved in the Martin Luther King Jr. - Day of Service initiative. It is one of our favorite days of the year! This year’s event will be held on Monday, January 18, 2016. Once again we will be offering three opportunities for our Hillendale community to get involved.

1 - Join us on January 18 and help us make 100 quarts of soup and 300 bagged lunches to be distributed to needy families in Southeastern Chester County. We also need help to make greeting cards and placemats to accompany the soup and lunches. There will be two volunteer sessions. The first session will run from 9 - 10AM and the second session will run from 10:15 - 11:15AM. Several volunteer opportunities associated with making bagged lunches and soup will be offered during each session. Please choose a session that works best for you or volunteer for both. All volunteer activities will be held in the gymnasium and cafeteria area at Hillendale Elementary. These areas can be accessed via the lower entrance. Please contact Steve Dissinger if you have any questions, (email or by phone, (610) 388-1439 ext 3634).

2 - Please donate nonperishable food items to our MLK - Food Drive. We will be collecting nonperishable food items that will be donated to the Kennett Square Food Cupboard and “The Bridge” in West Grove. Suggested items for donation include cereal, canned fruit juice, spaghetti, peanut butter, jelly, cooking oil, canned fruit, canned meat, pasta, mac and cheese, salad dressings, soup, beans, beans and rice, rice in 1lb bags, instant potatoes and stuffing mix.

3 - We are also continuing our "Backpacks for MLK's Dream" Project. This project benefits La Comunidad Hispana - a community center located in Kennett Square who is dedicated to empowering immigrants and low-income residents of southern Chester County to stay healthy, build strong families and lead productive and fulfilling lives. We are asking the Hillendale community to collect school supplies and backpacks. The backpacks, filled with school supplies, will be donated to disadvantaged children in our community through La Comunidad Hispana. To keep things simple, we have come up with three ways to donate to the "Backpacks for MLK's Dream" Project -
  • make straight donation via check (checks can be written out to HES with subject "Backpacks for MLK's Dream")
  • make a donation of a new or "slightly used" backpack
  • make a donation of school supplies - these donations are being organized by grade levels
    • Kindergarten - please donate boxes of number two pencils
    • First Grade - please donate boxes of markers
    • Second Grade - please donate boxes of crayons
    • Third Grade - please donate packages of glue sticks
    • Fourth Grade - please donate packages of folders
    • Fifth Grade - please donate spiral notebooks

All nonperishable food items, backpacks and school supplies can be placed in the large shopping cart located in our main lobby through January 15. We hope the children get excited to see just how much Hillendale cares as they watch the donation piles grow and grow.

We are aware that families are asked to give many times throughout the year so participation is optional.  Regardless, we hope all families will join us on January 18 to help make soup and bagged lunches and also assemble the backpacks and make cards to wish these children and families well.

Thank you!
Steve Dissinger - Principal
