MLK Day of Service

Dear Hillendale Families,

MLK Day of Service is right around the corner…  On January 16, 2017 our community will gather together on MLK Day and make soup, sandwiches and cookies to be delivered to a local shelter for disadvantaged families.  We also send homemade placemats and special cards to send with the soup and sandwiches.
We will also be partnering with La Comunidad Hispana (a community center located in Kennett Square dedicated to empowering immigrants and low-income residents of southern Chester County).  As part of our partnership with La Comunidad Hispana we will, once again, be hosting the "Backpacks for MLK's Dream" Project.  It was a big success last year and we are excited to help again this year.
Leading up to our Day of Service, we will be asking the Hillendale community to collect school supplies, gently used books and backpacks to support the "Backpacks for MLK's Dream" Project.  The HES children will help stuff the backpacks full of donated supplies during our Day of Service program.
There are many ways that your family can contribute to the MLK Day of Service and/or the "Backpacks for MLK's Dream" Project.
#1) make a donation via check (written out to HES with subject line "MLK day of service" - these donations will be used to purchase additional backpacks and/or food for lunches)
#2) make a donation of a NEW backpack
#3) make a donation of school supplies.  These donations will be organized by grade level and are as follows:
  • Kindergarten - Number 2 Pencils
  • First Grade - Markers
  • Second Grade - Crayons
  • Third Grade - Glue Sticks
  • Fourth Grade - Folders
  • Fifth Grade - Spiral Notebooks
#4) make a donation of any new and/or gently used books
#5) attend the MLK Day of Service and help us prepare all of the donated supplies
Boxes will be set up outside of the office for all donations.  We hope the children get excited to see just how much Hillendale cares as they see the donation piles grow and grow.
We are excited about this event.  However, we are also aware that families are asked to give many times throughout the year so participation is optional.
In addition to the "Backpacks for MLK's Dream" Project, Hillendale will be offering other volunteer opportunities on MLK Day of Service.  These opportunities will be provided in two sessions:
  • Session #1 9:00 -10:00
  • Session #2 10:15 - 11:15
We need volunteers for the following activities during each session:
  • Cook Soup
  • Bake Cookies
  • Make Snack Mix
  • Make Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
  • Make Placemats
  • Make Cards
  • Decorate Bags
  • Prepare Backpacks
We really hope you will join us on January 16 for our MLK Day of Service!
